There was a lovely road swinging down and off to the right. I could not tell if it was private or not. I knocked on the door of a beautiful old home and was greeted by Sandra. I explained that I was on my way to Sheet Harbour and saw the road and wondered if it was private. She said it was but she would be so pleased of I would walk to the shore, sit in her chair and enjoy the islands in the inlet. She is a 70 year old beautiful widow whose daughter is concerned that she spends too much time alone. “I don’t feel alone,” she said. "How can you be alone in all this beauty? My bed is by the window and as the sun rises I look out the bay to the islands. I used to camp on the islands but now they say I am too old. I am getting a bit stiff but I feel so young. There are such beautiful sand beaches on those islands. … I go into Porters Lake once a month for groceries. There is a nice place at Norse Cove Cafe to have lunch.” … On we chatted and I felt I had met a kindred spirit.
I hope you enjoy her walk to the sea half as much as I did.
Then it was on to Sheet Harbour and West River. Sheet Harbour community is along the shore of Sheet Harbour, which has two arms: the Northwest Arm and the Northeast Arm. Two rivers flow into the harbour: West River into the Northwest Arm, and East River into the Northeast Arm. Little West River, a minor river, also flows into the Northwest Arm. What a place rich in lumbering history.
